Suspension of LG chairmen in Benue not witchhunt – Deputy Speaker, Danladi Lami

The Benue State House of Assembly Deputy Speaker, Danladi Lami, has commended Governor Hyacinth Alia for his decisive action in suspending the 23 Local Government Area (LGA) chairmen and councillors in the state.

The suspension follows the recommendation made by the House to address allegations of misappropriation of funds within the local government system.

Lami in a statement on Friday said the action was not intended to target individuals but to ensure accountability and transparency.

She emphasised that the investigation is crucial to protecting the interests of the people of Benue State and maintaining the integrity of democratic institutions.

The Deputy Speaker called on the suspended Chairmen to fully cooperate with the committee assigned to conduct the probe.

She asserted that those who have conducted their duties with honesty and integrity should have no concerns about the process.

The statement reads below;

“This move comes in response to the recommendation of the House, which seeks to address allegations of misappropriation of funds within the local government system.

“I want to emphasize that this is not an attempt to witch-hunt anybody but a bold step towards ensuring accountability and transparency in the management of public resources. The probe initiated by the government is essential in safeguarding the interests of the people of Benue State and maintaining the integrity of our democratic institutions.

“I call upon the affected chairmen and council members to fully cooperate with the committee responsible for conducting the probe. It is imperative that they provide all necessary information and documentation to aid in a thorough and fair investigation. I believe that those who have conducted their affairs with honesty and integrity have nothing to fear from this process.

“I also express my gratitude to the members of the Benue State House of Assembly for their timely and unanimous support in recommending the suspension of the chairmen and council members. This collective action demonstrates our commitment to good governance and our dedication to serving the best interests of our constituents. Together, we can ensure that the resources allocated to our LGAs are utilized for the benefit of the people and the development of our state.

“In conclusion, I reiterate my support for Governor Alia’s decision to suspend the 23 LGA chairmen and council members. Let us remain steadfast in our pursuit of accountability and justice, as we work towards building a stronger and more prosperous Benue State for all.”
