World Population Day: Nigeria Ranked Sixth Most Populated Nation- Commission

Ahead of World Population Day, Nigeria says it is committed to achieving gender equality and conducting a credible 2023 Population and Housing Census for National Planning and development in the country.

The National Population Commission in Nigeria says it is committed to generating data for national growth and development as Nigeria is one of the countries with a rapidly growing population in the world.

The Chairman of the National Population Commission in Nigeria, Mr. Nasir Kwarra said the country’s “population is currently estimated at slightly over 216 million, placing Nigeria as the sixth most populated nation in the world.”

Mr. Kwarra who made the statement in commemoration of world population day in Abuja Nigeria’s Capital, added that “Nigeria was listed among the nine countries in the world whose rapid population growth contributed to the 8 billion reach on November 15th, 2022.”

He also noted that “predictions show that expected half of the global population growth between now and 2050 will be from the Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) region”.

The Commission further said that “Nigeria will be a major contributor to that regional growth driven by past/existing momentum growth.”

Also speaking, the Country Representative of the United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA, Ms. Ulla Muller who spoke on this year’s theme charged Nigerians on the wellbeing of the girl’s children and gender equality.
