UCDA to demolish shanties in Umuahia

The acting General Manager of Umuahia Capital Development Authority, UCDA, Mrs. Kanno Chinyere Kanno, has warned owners and occupants of shanties littered in parts of Umuahia, the Abia State capital, to remove them immediately.

She gave the warning while speaking about the plans of her office to rid the capital of shanties and other illegal structures.

She advised those living or using the shanties to remove them and vacate such places immediately, as officials of the UCDA would soon embark on the demolition of the unapproved structures.

Mrs Kanno, who warned that her office would not listen to any plea during the planned demolition exercise, said final warnings would be distributed to owners and occupants of the structures before they are eventually pulled down.

She expressed dismay at the rate at which some persons desecrated the aesthetics of Umuahia through the erection of unapproved structures.

“We are telling them to go and remove them because we are coming back for them. We are not going to listen to anybody”, she warned.

In a related development, the UCDA acting GM has assured the Nigerian Institute of Architects members of her agency’s readiness to partner with them in maintaining orderly development in Umuahia.

She gave the assurance in her office while receiving members of the Nigerian Institute of Architects, Abia State chapter.

In their addresses, the leaders of the Nigerian Institute of Architecture, Mr. Anagha Ndukwo and another official, Professor Alozie George, noted that their visit was to congratulate and familiarize themselves with the acting GM, promising that the architects were ready to offer professional support.
