The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, OIC, has sturdily condemned last Wednesday’s military coup that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum of Niger Republic.
The Saudi Press Agency reports that Hissein Brahim Taha, the OIC Secretary-General, is following with great concern the developments in Niger, which is an OIC member state.
Taha condemned any attempt to seize power by force and called for the immediate release of Bazoum and the restoration of the rule of law in Niger, it added.
He also expressed his solidarity with the people of Niger and the OIC’s full support for the regional efforts being made toward restoring peace, stability and security, and stability to Niger, as well as to the entire Sahel region.
Soldiers in Niger had overthrown Bazoum, the democratically elected president, Niger’s Defense and Security Forces said in a press release broadcast on national television last Wednesday, hours after the president was supposedly held hostage.
However, despite the warning issued last Wednesday by the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, Bola Tinubu, the Nigerien soldiers took over power on Thursday morning President Bazoum.
Bazoum had been in detention since the early hours of Wednesday, when the soldiers first attempted the coup.
