The Borno State National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp has finally re-opened its doors to newly posted youth Corp members, marking the end of a 13-year hiatus caused by the presence of insurgents in the State.
At the swearing-in ceremony, Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, expressed his delight and gratitude to Almighty God for this long-awaited opportunity.
“I warmly congratulate and welcome you all to Borno State. This is a stepping stone to unlock a wide range of opportunities for you and the people of Borno. Many of us can recall that for about 13 years, the NYSC orientation programme was closed due to the exigencies of Boko Haram. But by the grace of Almighty Allah and the gallantry of our military, police, DSS, civil defence corps, and other paramilitary establishments, as well as voluntary organizations, CJTF hunters, and vigilantes, they secured the peace that enabled us to gather here and make this orientation possible for these young Nigerian men and women.”
Governor Zulum emphasized the longstanding desire to form a strong partnership with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in building a new Borno State. He assured the newly arrived Corps members that his administration is committed to meeting all their welfare needs, ensuring that they surpass the achievements of their predecessors in the state.
Furthermore, the governor urged the state NYSC commander to prioritize the reconstruction of the NYSC permanent site, as it has been identified as one of the challenges affecting the organization.
Governor Zulum also encouraged the camp managers to collaborate closely with the Borno State officials to select and engage medical doctors and other healthcare professionals.
The State Coordinator of Borno NYSC, Comrade Mohammed Jiva, commended the governor for his efforts in facilitating the return of the Orientation Course to Borno State. He also expressed gratitude for the provision of all necessary facilities that made this day a reality.
“Your Excellency, distinguished guests, I am pleased to inform you that a total of 1,125 Prospective Corps Members were registered, with 629 males and 496 females. I am glad to report that none of them encountered any security threats to their lives and properties during their respective journeys to Borno State.”
Jiva also acknowledged the invaluable support of the Theatre Commander, North East, Operation Hadin Kai, Maj Gen GU Ndubuisi, the GOC, 7 Division, Maimalari Military Cantonment, Maj Gen PP Malla, and the Garrison Commander, Brig Gen TM Opurun, in ensuring the success of the event.
