WAFU Championship: Delta Queens lose to Ghana’s Ampem Darkoa in final

Nigeria Professional Women’s League champions Delta Queens lost 1-0 to Ghana’s Ampem Darkoa in the final of the WAFU Championship at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City, on Thursday.

After dominating play in the first half, Delta Queens conceded in the 43rd minute.

Ophelia Amponsah fired home the decisive goal following a counter-attacking move.

Delta Queens failed to find the equaliser in the second half despite a long period of pressure on the opponent’s goal area.

The hosts also missed out on a place in the CAF Women’s Champions League following the defeat.

It is the first time Nigeria will not be participating in the CAF Women’s Champions League since its inception three years ago.

Rivers Angels represented the country at the inaugural edition, while Bayelsa Queens finished third at the last edition.
