The Benue State Government has said plans are underway to reintroduce the Governor’s Football Cup competition, after a seven-year hiatus.
The Commissioner for Youths, Sports and Creativity, Terkimbi Ikyange, disclosed this on Friday in Makurdi when officials of Benue State Football Association, BSFA, paid him a courtesy visit.
Ikyange reiterated his Ministry’s commitment to the overhaul of the sports sector in order to actualize Governor Hyacinth Alia’s vision of social cohesion, economic prosperity and human capital development through sports.
According to him, efforts are underway to improve the quality of sporting facilities that are currently in a sorry state so as to create an enabling environment for talent development, and attract interest and investment from external bodies.
He also intimated the association of plans by the Alia administration to recommence the sponsorship of sporting activities like the Governor’s Cup.
Ikyange stressed that his Ministry will see to it that Benue State regains its place as a formidable force in national and international football by reenacting the glorious days of BCC Lions and Lobi Stars FC.
He urged members of the BSFA to support the governor’s vision for the revitalization of the sporting sector, especially football, in the state.
In his remarks, BSFA Chairman, Paul Edeh, commended the efforts being made by the Benue State government towards improving grassroot football development in the state.
