The Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Sule Abdulaziz, has called for proper regulation of energy storage in the power sector to address the ongoing power crisis.
Absence of Energy Storage Regulation
Speaking at the three-day 2023 Nigeria Energy Leadership Summit in Lagos, Abdulaziz highlighted that the 2023 Electricity Act failed to address the crucial issue of energy storage.
“There needs to be a regulatory framework in place to account for the amount of energy that individuals and households are expected to store for safety reasons. Energy storage is currently lacking in the electricity market, and this is a significant oversight in the new act,” he stated.
Importance of Technical Standards and Regulations
In line with Abdulaziz’s call for regulation, the Managing Director of the Nigeria Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA), Aliyu Tukur Tahir, emphasized the importance of developing technical standards and regulations to mitigate electricity-related hazards.
Tahir emphasized that the agency’s primary function is to enforce technical standards and regulations, conduct inspections, tests, and certification of electrical installations, meters, and instruments to ensure the efficient production of sustainable electricity power supply.
“Mitigating electricity hazards is crucial for achieving self-reliable and sustainable electricity supply,” Tahir asserted.
Ongoing Power Crisis
It is worth noting that the national grid has faced significant challenges recently, with the grid collapsing three times within a week, leading to nationwide blackouts.
