The wife of the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Patience Umo Eno, has called on farmers in the state to adopt modern cultivation methods and recycling of waste materials to preserve the environment against further degradation.
Promoting Sustainable Farming
During the 8th anniversary celebration of Family Empowerment and Youth Re-Orientation Path-initiative (FEYReP), a Non-Governmental Organisation founded by the wife of former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Dr. Martha Udom Emmanuel, Mrs. Eno emphasized the importance of embracing sustainable farming practices.
Pastor Patience Eno, who was represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Dr. Ini Adiakpan, urged farmers, especially women, to adapt to new cultivation techniques in order to mitigate the effects of climate change.
Transitioning to Modern Cultivation Methods
Highlighting the need for adaptation, Mrs. Eno stated, “For the women, you have to do a lot of adaptation. The traditional way of cultivation must give way to modern ways of cultivation. We now have dry season farming too, and that is to cushion the effects of climate change.”
She also emphasized the importance of waste management, stating, “The use of polythene has to be checked. Right from the home, we should learn to sort our refuse to separate the ones that can be recycled from the ones that can be burnt because those are key climate change issues.”
Praising Environmental Advocacy
Mrs. Eno commended the former First Lady on the formal launch of the Climate Change For All Initiative, a subsidiary of FEYReP, aimed at creating awareness about global warming and its effects. She praised Dr. Emmanuel for her continuous impact on society through FEYReP even after leaving office as the Governor’s wife.
Government Support for Climate Action
Representing the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, was his Deputy, Dr. Akon Eyakenyi. During the event, Dr. Eyakenyi unveiled the Climate Action for All Initiative, highlighting the government’s commitment to addressing climate change and protecting the environment.
According to Dr. Eyakenyi, the initiative’s involvement in climate change issues demonstrated their interest in global affairs and the importance of environmental conservation.
