In a recent reception organized in her honor in Zaria, Justice Binta Zubairu of the Court of Appeal clarified that judges are not responsible for the delay in the dispensation of justice, contrary to popular belief among Nigerians.
Justice Zubairu emphasized that the prompt delivery of justice requires coordinated efforts from judges, the prosecution, lawyers, and other stakeholders. She explained that while judges or magistrates are typically ready to adjudicate cases, delays often occur due to the unpreparedness of the prosecution or the excuses presented by lawyers.
“It is important to understand that these challenges are evident in courts, but because judges cannot voice their frustrations, the blame is shifted solely onto them,” Justice Zubairu stated.
She further pointed out that investigations by the police often take longer than expected in simple cases, which contributes to the delays in justice dispensation. Justice Zubairu commended the Zazzau Emirate for their support and celebration of her promotion and appointment.
As the first female from the Zazzau Emirate to be elevated to the rank of Justice of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zubairu expressed gratitude to the Almighty God and acknowledged that her path to the judiciary was unexpected.
“As a child, I aspired to be a school principal to ensure that all children have access to education,” she shared. “Becoming a judge was never in my wildest dreams, but destiny led me to the judiciary.”
The Emir of Zazzau, Ahmad Bamalli, expressed pride in Justice Zubairu’s achievements and encouraged her to embody honesty and professionalism as an ambassador of the emirate. Justice Ishaq Bello, Chairman of the Presidential Task Force Committee on Prison Decongestion and former FCT Chief Judge, advised young judges to adopt a strong work ethic and dedication to excel in their careers.
By clarifying the role of judges in the dispensation of justice and highlighting the collaborative nature of the justice system, Justice Zubairu hopes to end the blame game and foster a better understanding among Nigerians.
