The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed, has announced that President Bola Tinubu has approved the purchase of 12 attack helicopters. This decision will pave the way for the operationalization of the Nigerian Army Aviation.

Lieutenant General Taoreed made this announcement during the recently held Maiden Nigerian Army Aviation Seminar from September 25th to 28th, 2023, at the Command Officer’s Mess in Abuja.

In his speech, Lieutenant General Taoreed expressed his appreciation to President Tinubu for supporting the Nigerian Army’s vision and making history by bringing it to fruition. He also commended the leadership of the Nigerian Army Aviation for their adaptability and proactive approach.

The Nigerian Army Aviation is designed to enhance the agility, responsiveness, and efficacy of ground troops, while also contributing to the overall success of joint and coalition forces, according to General Lagbaja, who heads the Nigerian Army Aviation.

He further explained that while the Nigerian Army Aviation focuses on tactical and operational engagements, the Air Force handles larger tasks to achieve strategic effects.

Lieutenant General Taoreed emphasized the significant progress made by the Nigerian Army in training pilots, aircraft engineers, technicians, and other ground support crew. Recognizing the technical nature of aviation, he highlighted the importance of learning from experienced mentors.

He acknowledged the international collaborations that have aided the development of the Nigerian Army Aviation and mentioned that the Service sought guidance from the Nigerian Air Force to avoid costly mistakes.

The establishment of the Nigerian Army Aviation Coordination Office in December 2014 marked the beginning of the Nigerian Army’s aviation aspirations.

Notable attendees at the seminar included the former Chief of Defence Staff, Gen LEO Irabor (rtd), who is the first Coordinator of the Nigerian Army Aviation Establishment, Hon Abdullahi Idris Garba, Chairman of the House Committee on Aviation, heads and representatives of sister Services and other security agencies, and retired military officers.

This development signifies a significant step forward for the Nigerian Army in its quest to enhance its operational capabilities. The purchase of these helicopters will undoubtedly bolster the Nigerian Army’s readiness and effectiveness in addressing security challenges across the country.
