The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted approval for the elevation of Niger State College of Education to a full-fledged university. The decision was announced by the Acting Executive Secretary of NUC, Chris Maiyaki, during a meeting with the Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umar Bago, at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Maiyaki stated that the institution had previously received conditional recognition as a university of education in 2013. However, certain conditions had not been fulfilled by previous administrations in Niger State. The current government, under Governor Bago’s leadership, has successfully met these conditions, leading to the revalidation of the university’s status.

With this approval, Niger State University of Education now becomes the 63rd state-owned university in Nigeria, making it a significant milestone for the state. The recognition of the university is effective from 28th September 2023. The NUC will inform other relevant agencies, such as the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), about the new status.

During the meeting, Maiyaki emphasized the importance of enhancing the university’s facilities and ensuring that it meets the expectations set by the NUC. He assured Governor Bago that the Commission is ready to provide the necessary guidance and support for the institution to thrive.

Expressing his delight, Governor Bago commended Maiyaki on his appointment as the Acting Executive Secretary of NUC. He outlined his vision for the development of the education sector in Niger State, highlighting three key areas of focus. Firstly, he aims to convert Niger State College of Education, Minna, to a university of education, reviving the ambition that had previously been delayed. Secondly, the governor requested expedited approvals for the IBB University Lapai, which aspires to offer Medicine as a course of study. Lastly, he expressed his desire to see the Federal College of Education in Kontogora transformed into a university of education. Additionally, Governor Bago mentioned the aspirations of the Federal Polytechnic in Bida to become a degree-awarding institution.

Regarding funding for the new university, the governor explained that the Education Trust Fund Law in Niger State would provide the necessary resources. Under this law, one percent of every government contract and transaction within the state is allocated to the Education Fund, ensuring sustainable financial backing for educational initiatives.

The upgrade of Niger State College of Education to a university not only opens new opportunities for aspiring students but also reflects the government’s commitment to the development of the education sector.
