The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Nigeria is calling on the media in the country to establish a sustained partnership with the commission to build a society where human rights are upheld and justice prevails. This plea was made by the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Mr. Tony Ojukwu, during an interaction with journalists in Abuja.
Recognizing the critical role of the media in nation-building, Ojukwu reaffirmed the commitment of the NHRC to the promotion, protection, and enforcement of human rights in Nigeria. He stated, “As a human rights institution, the commission remains committed to ensuring that the rights of every Nigerian are respected and protected regardless of their background and beliefs.”
Ojukwu further emphasized that the NHRC serves as a beacon of hope, a refuge for the oppressed, and a watchdog against any encroachment on human rights. He expressed gratitude to the media for amplifying human rights issues and giving voice to the voiceless.
Addressing journalists, Ojukwu encouraged them to sustain their commitment to shining a light on human rights violations, promoting justice, and advocating for a fair and equitable society. He acknowledged the journalists who have consistently supported the commission’s mandate and assured them that their dedication to serving humanity will not be taken for granted.
The partnership with the media is seen as significant in raising awareness of human rights issues and sparking meaningful conversations that lead to effective and positive change. Ojukwu stressed the pivotal role of the media as the Fourth Estate in making this goal a reality.
During the interaction, journalists had the opportunity to ask observation questions and provide suggestions. The NHRC recognizes the invaluable contribution of the media in promoting human rights and seeks to strengthen this partnership to further advance the rights of Nigerians.
