The Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has made a significant announcement during the Independence Day celebration at Dr Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka. He revealed that the Anambra International Airport will now bear the name of the late literary icon, Professor Chinua Achebe.
In a departure from the norm, where projects are usually named after public office holders, Governor Soludo expressed his desire to recognize Achebe’s immense contribution to Nigerian literature. He highlighted the importance of acknowledging individuals who have made significant contributions to society, irrespective of their political involvement.
“We must signal that one does not have to hold political positions to contribute to the advancement of our civilization,” Governor Soludo remarked. “Henceforth, we shall be deliberate in fishing out and celebrating our largely unsung heroes—a source of motivation for our children and youths. This includes distinguished teachers, medical and other professionals, individuals known for their honesty and integrity, philanthropists with transparent sources of wealth, entrepreneurs and job creators, community leaders and developers, and clergy with exceptional devotion.”
As an example of an unsung African hero, Soludo recognized late Professor Albert Chinualumogu Achebe. Achebe, who was neither a President nor a Governor, left an indelible mark on African literature and culture.
“Achebe gave African literature an identity and a voice. In a way, he reconstructed and redefined our sense of self. His impact transcended national boundaries and made him a global figure, yet he remains largely unsung in his homeland,” Governor Soludo pointed out.
In light of this, the Anambra International Cargo and Passenger Airport, located in Umueri, will now be known as the Chinua Achebe International Airport, Umuero. Governor Soludo emphasized that the airport should attain international status, and he hopes to collaborate with the Federal Government to bring this vision to fruition.
This renaming serves as a tribute to Achebe’s enduring legacy, ensuring that his name and contributions are forever associated with the Anambra region. By honoring a literary giant like Achebe, the state of Anambra sets a precedent for recognizing and celebrating individuals who have made invaluable contributions to literature, culture, and society as a whole.
