A group of Igbo lawyers in Lagos, known as ‘Otu Oka-Iwu Nigeria’, has called on the governors of the South-East to work together and address the recurring sit-at-home order that takes place on Mondays in the region.

Speaking at their inaugural press conference in Lagos, the President of the group, Mazi Okechukwu Unegbu, emphasized the negative impact of the sit-at-home directive on the economy of Igboland. He urged the governors to come up with effective strategies to address the issue.

“The sit-at-home order in Igboland every Monday has become a norm, and people have come to believe that going out on Mondays poses a risk to their safety. We feel abandoned by the government that promised to protect us. Through this medium, we are pleading with the government to intervene in Igboland,” he stated.

In addition, Unegbu highlighted the security challenges faced by the South-East, which are hindering its economic growth and development.

“Igboland has turned into a killing field where no one, regardless of age, is safe. It is the responsibility of the government, both at the federal and regional levels, to ensure the safety of lives and property,” he lamented.

Unegbu expressed deep concern over the decline in educational activities in the region, remarking on Igboland’s previously renowned commitment to education.

“Today, it appears that the children in Igboland have lost interest in education, which is a worrying trend. There was a time when there was healthy competition among states in Igboland to achieve top positions in the WAEC rankings. However, now we hear reports of our children being more inclined towards engaging in fraudulent activities rather than pursuing education,” he shared.

Unegbu called on the governments in Igboland to take immediate action to reverse this alarming decline in educational standards.

“We are advocates for the unity of our great country, Nigeria. We have no other nation to call our own,” Unegbu concluded.
