The National Examination Council (NECO) has issued a stern warning that it will withhold the results of candidates from states that owe a total of N5.5 billion in examination fees. This debt has accumulated over a span of 12 years, from 2011 to 2023.
During the announcement of the June/July 2023 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) results, the Registrar and Chief Executive of NECO, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, stated that it is imperative for the indebted states to settle their liabilities without delay. Failure to do so will result in the Council refusing to release the results of their students.
Unfortunately, Prof. Wushishi did not disclose the identities of the states in question. However, he reiterated his call for prompt settlement of the debts, emphasizing that the funds are vital for the smooth operation of the Council.
“We urge these states to honour their financial obligations. Until the outstanding debts are fully paid, we will not release the results of candidates from these states,” Prof. Wushishi asserted.
He further stressed that the underperformance of some states should serve as a wake-up call to examine and revamp their education sectors, as well as evaluate all aspects of their educational systems.
In related news, it has been reported that 61 percent of candidates achieved a commendable feat by obtaining a minimum of five credits, including English and Mathematics.
