Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro has acknowledged the challenge of selecting the right players for the national team, given the wealth of talent available in Nigeria. Recently, he traveled to England to observe Nigerian stars and assess English-based players eligible to represent the Eagles. The 62-year-old coach emphasized that the nation is fortunate to have numerous talented individuals, including Eberechi Eze, Michael Olise, Folarin Balogun, Carney Chukwuemeka, Tosin Adarabioyo, and Noni Madueke, all of whom are waiting for a national call-up.

Peseiro noted that he plans to extend invitations to players who demonstrate a genuine passion for playing for Nigeria. He explained that the selection process is not straightforward, stating, “There are many, many players at the moment that can play for Nigeria. You receive some information or when you watch many players on TV or live, you can discover more players.” During his time in England, he attended several matches, which allowed him to identify potential players, particularly young talents who could contribute to the national team.

The coach expressed optimism about the quality of players available, stating, “If we want to win the next AFCON, I am happy because I have many players with the quality to create a good national team.” However, he also acknowledged the difficulty of making the right selections. Peseiro explained that he aims to observe players in matches before inviting them to training sessions and friendly games. His goal is to form a cohesive group that can develop together and implement strategies to secure victory in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.

Peseiro emphasized the importance of players demonstrating maximum commitment and motivation to represent Nigeria. He highlighted that while quality is essential, the demand and desire to play for the national team are equally crucial. Since his appointment in May 2022, Peseiro has given Anglo-Nigerian defender Bright Osayi-Samuel his Super Eagles debut during an international friendly against Portugal in December 2022. Notable players such as William Troost-Ekong, Leon Balogun, Ola Aina, Tyronne Ebuehi, Maduka Okoye, Josh Maja, and Victor Moses have also chosen to represent Nigeria despite being eligible for other countries.

Under Peseiro’s leadership, the Super Eagles have faced challenges, recording four defeats in friendly matches against Mexico, Ecuador, Algeria, and Portugal. However, he has also achieved two victories over Sierra Leone and Sao Tome and Principe in his initial Africa Cup of Nations qualifying games.
