Senator Ali Ndume and several other members of the Senate have voiced their criticism towards Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, over the rapid passage of certain bills without proper notification and member feedback.
In a video from Thursday’s sitting, Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South district under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), expressed his dismay at the frequent passage of bills by the Senate President without thorough reading and contributions from members.
“You are hastily passing bills, including money bills, without prior notification and without anyone’s input. This is detrimental to the progress of Nigeria,” he lamented.
Also weighing in on the matter, Senator Ogoshi Onawo of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) from Nasarawa State, criticized the rushed passage of sensitive bills, telling the Senate President, “Sir, today you occupy the seat, but history will judge you harshly if we continue with these practices that are detrimental to our country.”
Responding to the criticism, Senate President Akpabio defended his actions, stating, “If the bills we are passing are in the best interest of the country, then history will vindicate me. I assure you that we do not pass bills that do not benefit Nigerians.”
“Your point of order has been noted,” he added.
This controversy comes in the wake of earlier reports, three weeks ago, which claimed that an impeachment process against Akpabio was in motion. The Senate swiftly denied these rumors.
It is worth mentioning that back in June 2023, Senator Ali Ndume spearheaded the campaign to make Godswill Akpabio the Senate President.
