Former Senator Segun Baju has stated that Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), will play a significant role in the emergence of the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in the upcoming election. In a statement released to journalists on Saturday, Baju emphasized that any calls for Ayu to step down would be misguided.
Baju highlighted the effective management of the party by Dr. Ayu since his election as chairman in October 2021. He believes this leadership has initiated a series of events that will lead to Atiku Abubakar being elected as Nigeria’s president in early 2023. He urged party members to mobilize nationwide, as Nigerians are eager to replace the current government, which has caused widespread suffering and hardship.
Since 2015, Baju noted that every economic and social indicator has been negative, resulting in increased poverty, insecurity, and social disruption for millions of Nigerians. He argued that any suggestion for Dr. Ayu to resign is counterproductive, stating, “You do not change a winning team in the midst of a battle.” Baju expressed confidence that Ayu is poised to revitalize the PDP and help rescue Nigeria from its current challenges. He concluded by asserting that once the PDP government is established in Abuja in 2023, Dr. Ayu will take the necessary steps to lead the nation forward.
