In a spectacular display of cultural traditions and social cohesion, the Kano State Government orchestrated a mass wedding ceremony for 3,600 individuals from various backgrounds across the 44 local government areas of the state. The event took place on Friday at the esteemed palace of the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Bayero.
The beneficiaries of this remarkable initiative were primarily composed of young men and women, widows, divorcees, and spinsters. Notable personalities who graced the occasion included the Honourable Governor Abba Yusuf, Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso, the leader of Kwankwasiyya, esteemed government officials, and revered religious leaders. Representing the Emir of Kano was Alhaji Yusuf Nabahani, the Madakin Kano.
Speaking on the occasion, Governor Yusuf expressed his belief that this matrimonial extravaganza serves as a testament to the state government’s steadfast commitment to preserving cultural traditions and fostering social unity. By providing couples with a memorable and cost-effective way to formalize their unions, Kano State is ensuring that the significance of marriage is cherished and celebrated.
Adding to the festivities, a traditional feast known as Walima will be held at the Government House on Saturday. This further reinforces the importance and joy of this collective union.
Governor Yusuf emphasized that this mass wedding initiative not only strengthens the bonds between couples but also showcases the state government’s dedication to supporting its citizens and promoting the institution of marriage. He expressed, “The event reflects the deep-rooted values and unity of the people in Kano State and highlights the government’s commitment to preserving traditions while envisioning a promising future for its people.”
Among the beneficiaries, Malam Musa Isyaku, a farmer from Tudun Wada Dankadai Local Government Area, expressed his gratitude and admiration for the political commitment demonstrated by Governor Yusuf. He shared, “I have been planning this wedding for the last three years, but I kept postponing it due to a lack of funds.”
Another beneficiary, Alhaji Abdulkadir Gezewa, had his three daughters and two sons united in matrimony through this initiative. He commended the governor for releasing funds for the purchase of furniture and other necessary items required for the successful conduct of the mass wedding. Alhaji Gezewa expressed, “We will continue to pray for the success of Governor Yusuf’s administration for identifying with the rural dwellers.”
The wedding ceremony not only signifies the celebration of love and union but also highlights the proactive efforts of the Kano State Government to uplift its citizens and maintain the rich cultural heritage of the state.
