The Kano State governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has affirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to empowering repentant youth and reintegrating them into society to secure a self-reliant future. This announcement was made on Tuesday at the Sani Abacha Stadium during a hangout event organized by the Kano State Police Command in collaboration with the Aminu Garba Magashi (AMG) Foundation.
In his statement, the governor emphasized that the state government has devised plans to empower these repentant individuals through skill acquisition and education. Furthermore, those who wish to pursue further education will be granted scholarships and sponsorships by the government. Alternatively, for those looking to acquire skills or venture into legitimate businesses, the full support of the state government will be available.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf commended the efforts of the State Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Usaini Gumel, for organizing the training of the repentant youth. Out of the 222 individuals present, 50 of them were selected from crime-prone local governments in Kano, including Fagge, Gwale, Dala, Nassarawa, Ungogo, and Kano Municipal, and have volunteered as Police constabulary members.
As part of the government’s initiatives, the governor announced that a security Communication centre will be re-established in addition to the provision of necessary logistics. This center will serve as a Quick Response Centre (QRC) equipped with modern Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras and manned by various security personnel. It will cover ten identified locations in the metropolis.
The Governor further explained that the abandonment of this facility contributed significantly to the escalating cases of phone snatching and other violent crimes that plagued the streets before his administration assumed office on May 29, 2023.
The Kano State Commissioner of Police, CP Muhammad Usaini Gumel, emphasized the significance of adopting a community-based approach to crime reduction and called on society to embrace the repentant individuals and engage them in life-changing programs. He assured the youth that his door is always open for advice and guidance as they forge ahead in their new lives.
The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, expressed delight at the positive transformation of these youth and urged them to seek knowledge and conduct themselves along the right path. He also commended the efforts of the State government in reducing crime rates.
Earlier, the chairman of the AMG Foundation, Dr. Aminu Garba Magashi, highlighted the importance of investing in the lives of young people, stating that they are the greatest asset of any society. He emphasized the need to offer support and guidance to the youth for the sake of peace, stability, and prosperity.
