The Nigeria Police Force has advised Nigerians against the negative portrayal of security agencies, particularly the police, to young ones in their formative ages.
The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, gave the advice on Sunday in a statement, while reacting to a trending video, where a man constantly rebuffed his daughter’s career choice to be a police officer.
A popular Nigerian Nollywood Actor (name withheld), in a viral video, was seen advising his girlchild not to be a police officer.
The actor told the child in the video that although he never hated the police, he hated the danger they constantly faced and their poor remuneration.
He advised his daughter to choose to become either a pilot, an engineer, a doctor, or a lawyer, amongst other professions.
The Force spokesman, however, warned that this could generate hatred and antagonism against lawful institutions in their minds as they grow up.
“Policing is a noble profession and the fact that some individuals infuse their nefarious intentions and activities should not deter but rather encourage noble individuals to join and serve diligently and honourably.
“Generally, security operatives are our ‘Guardian Angels’ who have continually shown interest and put in their best to defend the country and protect lives and property as enshrined in the extant laws of the land.
“Members of the public should do everything possible to encourage them, not to castigate them,” he advised.
Mr Adejobi reiterated the commitment of the current administration of the Force, under the leadership of Usman Baba, to rid the system of recalcitrant officers.
He urged all stakeholders in security management, particularly members of the public, to support the police in its quest to improve policing services in the country.
