Senate President Godswill Akpabio humorously cautioned the newly-confirmed chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Ola Olukoyede, against using him as a prime illustration in the ongoing battle against corruption. Akpabio’s statement, eliciting laughter from the House, occurred during Olukoyede’s screening by Senate members.
During his presentation on investigating a corruption case, Olukoyede mentioned the Senate President but swiftly halted upon observing the atmosphere in the chamber. “If we are investigating the Senate President for example,” began Olukoyede, only to be interrupted by the somber mood of the lawmakers.
In response, Akpabio jovially remarked, “I am pleased that the nominee wishes to use the Senate President as an example. However, Mr. nominee, for now, ignore the Senate President and direct your attention to this side of the chamber,” gesturing towards the seats of opposition lawmakers.
Subsequently, Olukoyede proceeded with his presentation without singling out specific individuals. He astutely noted, “When you combat corruption, you inevitably become the enemy of everyone.”
It is worth noting that Akpabio is currently facing allegations of misappropriation totaling approximately N108.1 billion before the EFCC. In April 2021, reports emerged that the former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs had been detained over purported attempts to bribe the agency’s former boss, Abdulrasheed Bawa, with $350,000.
This lighthearted yet significant exchange between Senate President Akpabio and the new EFCC Chair highlights the complex nature of the fight against corruption in Nigeria. As the nation continues its efforts to tackle this pervasive issue, Akpabio’s caution serves as a reminder that fairness and impartiality must prevail, ensuring that no individual is unduly singled out. Only by universally upholding the principles of justice can Nigeria truly combat corruption and foster a climate of integrity for the benefit of its citizens.
