Tributes Pour in as Former Ohanaeze Ndigbo President, Joseph Irukwu’s Body Arrives Umuahia

Igbos from all walks of life gathered at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia on Friday to pay their respects as the body of the late Professor Joseph Irukwu, former President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, arrived in the capital of Abia State.

The commendation service held in honour of the Igbo leader, who passed away in July 2023 at the age of 89, was attended by a large crowd comprised of traditional rulers, industry leaders, government officials, religious figures, and community leaders.

During his speech at the event, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, expressed his deep sorrow over Irukwu’s death, describing it as a significant loss for the Igbo community.

Iwuanyanwu fondly recounted Irukwu’s lifelong selfless dedication to the unity and progress of the Igbo people, and urged young Igbo youths to follow in his footsteps and shape a bright future for themselves.

Abia State governor, Alex Otti, also expressed his shock and sadness, stating that Irukwu’s demise was a tremendous loss for the state. Otti praised Irukwu’s selflessness and patriotism, highlighting his groundbreaking contribution as Nigeria’s first Professor of Insurance.

Chief Onyema Ugochukwu, speaking on behalf of the Abia State Council of Elders, lauded Irukwu’s role in the development of the old Eastern region and credited him with popularizing the insurance business among Igbo entrepreneurs.

Enthusiastically adding to the chorus of praise, Onwuka Orji, the President of Item Welfare Union, emphasized Irukwu’s immense contribution to the progress of his fatherland.

Prior to the commendation service, a ceremony was held to receive the body of the late Igbo leader at the Abia State High Court Complex in Umuahia.

Joseph Irukwu, also a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), will be laid to rest on Saturday, October 21, in Amaokwe Item, Bende Local Government Area of Abia State.
