Two brothers, Musa Abdullahi, aged 27, and Rabiu Abdullahi, aged 17, tragically lost their lives in a sewage tank in Kano State. The incident occurred on Saturday, January 21, 2023, and was confirmed by Saminu Abdullahi, the Public Relations Officer for the Kano State Fire Service, in a press statement on Sunday.
The fire service received a distress call at approximately 20:41 hours from Na Musa Abdullahi Sir Muhammad, reporting that a toilet digger was trapped in a pit toilet while attempting to drain it. Upon arrival at the scene in Sabon Gari Market, Layin Abacha, Fagge Local Government Area, at around 20:47 hours, the firefighters discovered that the two brothers were working in a public convenience pit toilet and had become trapped in a deep soak-away chamber.
During the rescue attempt, Musa Abdullahi was trapped inside the chamber, while his younger brother, Rabiu, tried to save him but unfortunately also became trapped. The firefighters acted swiftly and managed to rescue both brothers; however, they were found to be unconscious. They were immediately transported to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, where the on-call doctors in the emergency ward pronounced them dead upon arrival.
Following the incident, the remains of the victims were handed over to Inspector Abubakar Alhassan of the Sabon Gari Police Division, who is responsible for tracing and returning them to their family. The cause of the tragic event has been attributed to high temperatures and a lack of oxygen within the soak-away pit.
