The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, has expressed concerns about the health risks associated with excessive fasting. Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Monday, she highlighted that not only can prolonged fasting lead to kidney problems, but the use of substandard and unwholesome products can also result in kidney failure and, in severe cases, death. Kidney failure occurs when the kidneys can no longer effectively filter blood, leading to the accumulation of toxins in the body.

Dr. Adanze Asinobi, the President of the Nigerian Association of Nephrology, reported that approximately 869 million people worldwide are affected by kidney disease, with an increasing prevalence noted in Nigeria. Prof. Adeyeye emphasized the cultural significance of fasting in Nigeria, where both Muslims and Christians observe fasting periods. She pointed out that maintaining a homeostatic balance in the body is crucial, as adequate water levels are necessary for organ function.

She cautioned that some individuals fast for extended periods, such as 10 to 20 days, without consuming any water, which can severely impact kidney health. “The kidney is being punished,” she stated, explaining that a lack of water prevents the kidneys from diluting and filtering properly. Prof. Adeyeye advised that fasting should be approached with common sense to avoid detrimental effects on kidney health.

In addition to her warnings about fasting, the NAFDAC DG also cautioned the public against purchasing medicines from hawkers and corner stores. She urged individuals to buy medications only from licensed pharmacies to ensure safety and efficacy.
