Nasarawa Lawmaker Appeals Election Petition Tribunal’s Verdict

In a bid to reclaim his seat, John Ovey, a member of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly (NSHA) representing Keffi East on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has taken his case to the Court of Appeal, Makurdi Division. This comes after the Election Petition Tribunal nullified his election and ordered a rerun in four polling units of his constituency.

In the notice of appeal filed on Saturday, October 21, Ovey, through his legal counsel, John Matthew, listed eight substantial grounds to challenge the decision of the Election Petition Tribunal, which was presided over by Justice Francesca Nnang Isoni and was delivered on Sunday, October 1, 2023.

Ovey is seeking the appellate court’s intervention to overturn the tribunal’s ruling and uphold his victory, as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the March 18 election.

According to Ovey, the petition filed against his election by Isah Adamu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) lacked merit and should have been dismissed by the tribunal.

The appeal includes Isah Adamu, the APC, and INEC as the first, second, and third respondents, respectively.
