Malaysia’s Conference of Rulers recently announced that Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar of Johor has been named the country’s 17th king, according to local media reports.
The official installation ceremony for Sultan Ibrahim is scheduled to take place on January 31, 2024, as he prepares to succeed his predecessor, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah. Sultan Ahmad Shah, the keeper of the rulers’ seal, issued a statement on behalf of the Conference of Rulers.
With his ascension to the throne, Sultan Ibrahim brings with him a wealth of experience, having reigned over the state of Johor since 2010. The strategic location of Johor, bordering Singapore, positions Sultan Ibrahim to champion Malaysia’s stance as an open trading nation. His strong support for bilateral relations with China has been evident, highlighting the nation as a reliable and advantageous economic partner.
In addition to Sultan Ibrahim’s appointment, the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, has been elected as the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong for the same five-year term.
Malaysia operates as a constitutional monarchy, with nine sultans or rulers, each leading their respective states while also serving as religious leaders. They take turns assuming the role of the king for a five-year term, ensuring a diverse representation among the leadership.
