ICRC Expresses Shock at Unbearable Human Suffering in Gaza Amidst Israel-Hamas War

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has expressed deep concern over the dire state of human suffering in Gaza following the escalation of conflict between the Israeli military and Hamas fighters. In a statement provided to Media Talk Africa, the ICRC called for an immediate de-escalation of the conflict to allow for crucial humanitarian interventions.

The ICRC noted that weeks of fighting between Israel and Hamas had resulted in over two million innocent civilians being trapped in Gaza, with no safe escape routes available. The organization stressed the urgent need to protect and respect civilian lives on all sides.

Furthermore, the ICRC urged for the immediate restoration of critical services such as healthcare, water, and electricity in Gaza, prioritizing these essential lifelines. The organization emphasized the necessity of ensuring that hospitals can operate safely during this crisis.

“I am appalled by the unbearable level of human suffering and strongly urge the conflicting parties to de-escalate the situation as a matter of urgency. The tragic loss of countless civilian lives is deeply distressing. It is absolutely unacceptable that the people of Gaza have no safe havens amidst the relentless bombardments. The existing military blockade has severely hindered humanitarian response efforts, and this catastrophic failure cannot be tolerated by the international community,” expressed Mirjana Spoljaric, the president of the ICRC.

It is worth recalling that the conflict in Gaza intensified in early October, resulting in casualties on both sides – Israel and Hamas.
