President Bola Tinubu has expressed his determination to revolutionize Nigeria’s development trajectory, which he described as “crawling” compared to other thriving economies around the world. During a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu acknowledged the advancements Germany has made in green energy and emphasized Nigeria’s need to catch up.
Tinubu, who recently received a favorable Supreme Court judgement affirming his presidency, stated, “Nigeria is still crawling, but we are determined to change the narrative and bring about a transformative government in the country.”
In a warm welcome to the German delegation, Tinubu expressed his gratitude for Chancellor Scholz’s visit, remarking on the recent conclusion of Nigeria’s electoral exercise as a victory for democracy. He emphasized that the country could now direct its focus towards governance, economic growth, and defending democratic principles.
Tinubu also highlighted the potential for collaboration between Nigeria and Germany, citing the Nigerian business community’s willingness to explore partnerships with Europe’s largest economy. He showcased Nigeria’s abundant natural resources, favorable climate, and the ongoing efforts to transition to cleaner energy sources.
“Our hydrocarbon industry is still in its early stages of addressing environmental concerns as we move towards more sustainable energy alternatives,” Tinubu remarked.
Furthermore, he underlined the importance of Germany’s support in areas such as education, power, and mineral resources. Tinubu acknowledged the progress made in counterterrorism efforts but emphasized the need for continued assistance.
“For us to sustain democracy, rule of law, and freedom for our people, we must ensure that democracy triumphs in all circumstances. Your visit at this time is not just necessary but most welcome,” Tinubu said.
Tinubu drew attention to the security challenges in the Sahel region of Africa, including recent coups in Guinea and Niger, as he sought Scholz’s assistance in addressing security threats. Expressing gratitude for Germany’s previous contributions, including police training and law enforcement support, he stressed the need for continued cooperation.
In response, German Chancellor Scholz reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to democracy and the rule of law, underscoring the importance of strong bilateral relations between the two countries.
