Rising Cooking Gas Prices in Nigeria

The cost of cooking gas in Nigeria has seen an increase of 1.81% on a month-on-month basis, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The average retail price for refilling a 5kg cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, rose from N4,115.32 in August 2023 to N4,189.96 in September 2023.

However, there is a decline in price when comparing September 2023 to the same period last year, with a decrease of 6.36% from N4,474.48 in September 2022.

The NBS report also highlights regional disparities, with some northern states experiencing higher gas prices compared to the south. Kwara state has the highest average price for refilling a 5kg cylinder at N4,866.60, followed by Benue at N4,789.26, and Adamawa at N4,785.71.

On the other hand, prices are lower in parts of southern Nigeria. Ondo has the lowest price recorded at N3,364.62, followed by Ekiti at N3,450.06, and Edo at N3,626.17.

Analyzing the data by zone, the North-Central region has the highest average price for refilling a 5kg cylinder at N4,555.95, followed by the North-West at N4,394.40. The South-West region has the lowest average price at N3,809.22.

Moving on to larger cylinders, the average retail price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of cooking gas increased by 0.58% from N9,194.41 in August 2023 to N9,247.40 in September 2023. Similarly, when comparing September 2023 to the same period last year, a decrease of 6.65% is observed.

Cross River has the highest average retail price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder at N10,203.13, followed by Ogun at N9,967.11, and Nasarawa at N9,950.15. On the contrary, Adamawa has the lowest average price at N7,604.29, followed by Borno and Gombe at N8,113.69 and N8,188.75 respectively.

Analyzing the data by zone, the South-South region has the highest average price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder at N9,613.55, followed by the South-East at N9,393.69. The North-East has the lowest average price at N8,683.62.

Overall, these statistics show that cooking gas prices are on the rise in Nigeria. It is important for consumers to be aware of the regional variations in prices and make informed decisions when purchasing cooking gas.
