The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) has taken decisive action by shutting down 34 companies due to their failure to remit personal income tax of their employees and non-remittance of other taxes totaling N356.12 million.
Seyi Alade, the Director of Legal Services at LIRS, made this known on Monday during a state-wide tax law enforcement exercise.
Among the affected businesses are operators within the state’s vibrant hospitality sector.
“These companies diligently deduct personal income taxes from their employees’ salaries each month and also charge consumption taxes on goods and services purchased by customers,” Alade explained.
“Sadly, some unscrupulous firms withhold these payments, unlawfully diverting the funds for their own purposes,” he added.
