In this interview with Naomi Chima, popular actor and musician Charles Okocha, also known as Amoshine, discusses his life beyond fame, his journey as a single father, and how he has navigated the challenges he has faced in pursuit of his dreams. Okocha reflects on several traumatic experiences, including being struck by a stray bullet in 2015, undergoing surgery in London in 2019, and recently being involved in a serious accident. When asked to describe his experience surviving these catastrophic incidents, he expresses deep gratitude, stating, “I give God the glory for everything. I thank Him for everything; it all shows that God loves me. If He didn’t, I don’t think I would be living today.” He acknowledges that many people might not have survived similar circumstances, emphasizing that his resilience is a testament to divine love.
Okocha recounts the details of the accident, which occurred while he was traveling with friends. He had gone to Festac and was leaving around midnight when he accepted a ride from a friend. Despite his concerns about the friend’s speeding, he chose to go along with it. “Before we knew what was happening, the other car just tried to drive past us,” he recalls. The situation escalated quickly, resulting in their car tumbling and crashing into the barricades of a bridge. He reflects on how the barricades prevented a potentially fatal plunge into the river, highlighting the importance of caution on the road.
The accident served as a significant lesson for Okocha. He realizes that he could have avoided the incident had he chosen to drive his own car instead of riding with his friend. “I should have listened to my instinct,” he admits, noting that excessive speeding can lead to dire consequences. He emphasizes the importance of trusting one’s instincts and being cautious, especially when it comes to personal safety.
While being rescued from the accident scene, Okocha’s thoughts were with his children. “Just imagine you not being in this world, how they would feel and how things will be for them,” he reflects, underscoring the need for carefulness in life. He shares that he has two beautiful children, a son and a daughter, and that they are his primary motivation. He is focused on their well-being and finds fulfillment in being a single parent.
When discussing his single status, Okocha reveals that he has never been married and is content with his life as it is. He observes the current state of relationships, noting that many couples who seem stable often end up divorced. This reality makes him hesitant about marriage. However, he clarifies that he does intend to marry in the future. “I will get married, but I am just taking my time,” he says, acknowledging the need for a partner who can support both him and his children as they grow.
