On Monday, the Delta State Government announced the closure of schools in Asaba, the state capital, in anticipation of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential campaign rally scheduled for Tuesday. School managements informed their students not to return to school on that day due to the visit of the PDP’s presidential candidate. When approached for comment, the state Commissioner for Secondary Education, Rose Ezewu, declined to provide any statements.
In preparation for the rally, Asaba, particularly the Stephen Keshi Stadium—where the event will take place—and the newly constructed Koka flyover, have been spruced up. Additionally, there has been a noticeable increase in the presence of security personnel throughout the city. The vice-presidential candidate of the PDP and Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, remarked that there are clear signs that Nigerians are growing weary of the ineffective governance under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
During an inspection of the preparations at Stephen Keshi Stadium, Okowa expressed confidence that the PDP would offer the inclusive and purposeful leadership that the nation desperately needs. He stated, “The warm reception and support the PDP has received across the country indicate that Nigerians are optimistic about the need for positive change.” Okowa emphasized the party’s commitment to rescuing the nation and delivering good governance. He highlighted the experience of the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, noting that he understands the path to Nigeria’s recovery. Okowa pledged to collaborate with Abubakar and other citizens to recover, reset, and rebuild the country, acknowledging the widespread dissatisfaction with the current APC-led government. He concluded by expressing satisfaction with the arrangements for the rally, asserting that it would be a successful event on Tuesday.
