Former President Goodluck Jonathan Advocates for Peace Ahead of Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi Polls

Former Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, has expressed his views ahead of the forthcoming governorship elections in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi States, scheduled for Saturday, November 11, 2023.

Jonathan, in a personal statement released to the public, urged both voters and politicians to prioritize peace and lawful conduct, emphasizing the need to avoid any form of violence during the electoral process.

“As citizens prepare to exercise their voting rights in the governorship elections in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi States, I call on all voters and politicians to embrace peace and adhere to the rule of law,” the former President remarked.

“Let us refrain from engaging in any activities that could undermine the overall peace and stability of our states and our nation,” Jonathan added.

He further stressed that a true leader would not resort to violence or manipulation, stating, “A leader who genuinely cares for his people would not resort to employing thugs to harm or intimidate those he aspires to govern.”

Jonathan reiterated the sanctity of human life and the imperative to uphold peace, affirming, “I emphasize that no political ambition should ever come at the cost of citizens’ lives. Therefore, we must resist any form of temptation or inducement that may be instigated as a means of causing harm.”

Asserting the significance of credible, transparent, and peaceful elections for a thriving democracy, Jonathan urged electoral bodies, security agencies, and all stakeholders to execute their duties with professionalism and patriotism during and after the polls.

“Democracy derives its strength from the people; hence, we must strive to build the people’s confidence by ensuring that the electoral process unfolds in a peaceful and transparent manner. This is a collective obligation,” Jonathan declared.
