A non-governmental organization (NGO) has urged Nigerian youths to pursue entrepreneurship as a means of achieving financial independence and self-sufficiency. Arc. Edward Nkwegu, the founder of Regina Pacis Foundation, made this assertion during the 19th anniversary celebration of the foundation in Okpoduma village, Izzi local government area of Ebonyi State.
Nkwegu emphasized the significance of self-sustenance and entrepreneurship, highlighting the challenges associated with achieving financial stability. According to him, the pursuit of financial freedom is often hindered by misconceptions and poor financial habits, which perpetuate the cycle of poverty.
He noted, “The pursuit of self-sustenance is intricately linked to financial literacy, and it is imperative that individuals, especially the youth, are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to attain economic independence.”
The foundation’s vision revolves around eradicating poverty through the provision of financial education and mentorship, thereby enabling individuals to become self-reliant.
Speaking on the relevance of education in combating poverty, Nkwegu emphasized the need for a comprehensive review of existing curricula to incorporate practical financial education. He stressed that knowledge is the new currency and that empowering individuals with the right words and financial acumen is essential in breaking the cycle of poverty.
Furthermore, Nkwegu advocated for the development and support of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) as a strategic approach to creating sustainable employment opportunities for young people, women, and vulnerable segments of the society. He highlighted the pivotal role of MSMEs as the driving force of economic growth and the primary source of employment globally.
The event, which commenced with a Holy Mass officiated by the Bishop of Abakaliki Catholic Diocese, His Lordship, Dr. Peter Chukwu, received notable endorsement from key personalities such as Dr. Eze Emmanuel, Chairman of the occasion, and Chief Godwin Ogbaga, former Minister of Power and Steel for State, who both encouraged Nigerian youths to embrace entrepreneurship and strive for resilience in overcoming the prevailing economic challenges.
