Porto’s head coach, Sergio Conceicao, has shed light on the rationale behind his decision to make an early substitution during the team’s 2-1 victory against Vitoria Guimaraes on Saturday.
Zaidu Sanusi made a triumphant return to full action for Porto during the midweek clash against Royal Antwerp, following a nearly two-month absence due to injury. His exceptional performance earned him a second consecutive start against Vitoria Guimaraes.
The 26-year-old left-back seized the opportunity by scoring his maiden league goal for the Dragons during the match.
However, Sanusi was replaced just a few minutes into the second half.
Conceicao addressed his decision, stating, “He sustained a heavy stomp, and seemed to be struggling. Furthermore, I sensed that he was not performing optimally.”
“We must consider his prolonged absence, the two matches he played post-injury, and the challenge of regaining a competitive rhythm, which is never straightforward.”
“To his credit, he made an impact by scoring the goal, but when I observed his difficulties, I opted to bring in Taremi and Galeno, while shifting Pepê to a lower position. This strategic move yielded positive results as it provided us with opportunities to score additional goals.”
