LP Rejects INEC Imo Guber Result, Takes Legal Action

The gubernatorial candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in Imo state, Athan Achonu, has firmly rejected the outcome of the recently conducted election, declaring his intention to pursue legal redress in court.

Speaking on Sunday at his residence in Umulomo, Ehime Mbano Local Government Area, Achonu asserted that the election was riddled with irregularities, including vote buying and physical assaults on LP agents, warranting its outright cancellation.

Furthermore, he alleged that several voting locations operated without BVAS accreditation in direct contradiction to the pre-election assurances by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Achonu also accused security personnel of compromise during the election, citing examples such as a police officer being assaulted by voters while attempting to seize a ballot box, among other disturbing incidents.

Commending the unwavering commitment of LP supporters in the face of provocation, Achonu assured them of justice through the judicial system, expressing confidence in the integrity of the judiciary.

He decried the assault and detention of the LP chairman in Imo, Callistus Ihejiagwa, at the state collation centre, calling for the immediate arrest of those responsible for the incident.

“My party chairman was subjected to violence at the collation centre, as evidenced in a widely circulated video. Instead of apprehending the assailants, the police arrested and detained him, which is unacceptable,” Achonu stated.

With palpable concern, Achonu emphasized that the reported results must be cancelled and urged the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to take swift action in this regard.

As the LP mounts its legal challenge, the unfolding events following the Imo gubernatorial election continue to draw attention and sow seeds of uncertainty among the populace.
