Former Minister of the Niger Delta Affairs and the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District, Senator Godswill Akpabio, launched his Ward Tour in Oruk Anam Local Government on Wednesday. During the event, he urged the community to vote for the broom, symbolizing the APC, as he claimed that the “umbrella party is in tatters.” Akpabio explained that his decision to join the APC stemmed from the inability of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to protect its members. He reassured the local populace of his commitment to fulfilling his campaign promises if elected in the upcoming general elections.

Akpabio emphasized the importance of the forthcoming elections, describing them as national in scope. He called on the electorate to use their votes to support Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu for president, himself for senator, and other APC candidates during the elections scheduled for February 25. He stated, “The logo of our party is the broom. I am now in the broom party because the umbrella had long been torn into shreds.” As the National Vice Chairman of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, Akpabio initiated his ward tour following his Supreme Court victory in Oruk Anam, motivated by his affection for the community and gratitude for their support since 2006.

Reflecting on his political journey, Akpabio acknowledged the people of Oruk Anam as his political backbone, recalling their support during his gubernatorial aspirations in 2006. He noted, “You supported me to defeat over 56 other aspirants at the primaries. You also stood by me to win the governorship election in 2006 and re-elected me in 2011.” He highlighted his achievements as governor, stating that he laid a solid foundation for future development in the senatorial district and the state. “Before I left office in 2015, I was able to link Abak, Etim Ekpo, and Ika local government areas to other parts of the state through a good road network,” he declared.

Akpabio expressed his gratitude for the support he received, which enabled his election to the National Assembly. He stated that his decision to kick off the ward tour in Oruk Anam was a personal gesture of thanks to the community for their unwavering backing. He lamented that despite their overwhelming votes, some individuals conspired to undermine his victory in 2019, mentioning that the professor involved in that scheme is now in jail.

At the rally, Aniekan Abraham, the House of Assembly candidate for the Oruk Anam State constituency, pledged to deliver the local government for the APC. He expressed appreciation for Akpabio and his campaign team for choosing Oruk Anam as the starting point for the senatorial campaign, highlighting the significance of the local government in their political endeavors. Abraham stated, “Your ambition cuts across party lines. We need a voice at the national level, and we have collectively agreed that we will deliver Asiwaju Tinubu, Senator Akpabio, and other candidates at all levels. The results at the end of the polls will speak for themselves.”
