There are strong indications that the ongoing nationwide strike led by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) may be drawing to a close following a productive meeting between the unions and the Federal Government.

The crucial meeting, which took place on Wednesday, involved the Minister of Labour, Simon Bako Lalong, and the Minister of State for Labour, Hon. Nkeiruka Onyeajeocha. It was hosted at the office of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, who was also present.

The strike was instigated by the organized labour in response to the brutalization of NLC President, Joe Ajaero, in Owerri, Imo State, on November 1. The labour bodies have been adamant about the arrest and prosecution of the alleged political thugs responsible for the attack on the NLC President and other workers during a protest against unpaid salaries.

Since its commencement on Tuesday, the strike action has already had a noticeable impact on economic activities in various parts of the country.

Following the meeting with the labour leaders, the Minister of Labour, in a media briefing at the State House, expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating that the discussions were productive. He further disclosed that the labour leaders had agreed to consult with their constituents before making a final decision.

The Minister remarked, “The meeting was specifically convened to address the distressing events in Imo State, and the heavy security considerations prompted us to convene at the office of the National Security Adviser. We engaged in constructive dialogue and the labour leaders have committed to consulting their members with a view to suspending the strike.”

In a similar vein, the President of TUC, Comrade Festus Osifo, indicated that the Federal Government had made compelling appeals and pledges during the discussions, suggesting a potential resolution to the impasse.

He stated, “We had extensive deliberations where various reassurances were provided, building on the statement released by the NSA earlier today regarding the apprehension of some individuals. The Government presented compelling appeals and assurances, prompting us to reconvene and assess all discussions before communicating our decision accordingly.”
