The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has pledged to prioritize the enactment of legislation aimed at addressing the underlying causes of security challenges in Nigeria. He also affirmed plans to enhance the capabilities of Nigeria’s Armed Forces to effectively respond to these challenges.
Special Adviser to the Speaker on Media and Publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi, disclosed in a statement that Speaker Abbas made this commitment while inaugurating a two-day post-inauguration retreat for members of the House Committee on Defence. The retreat was jointly organized by the Committee and the National Defence College in Abuja.
Highlighting security as a key area in the Legislative Agenda of the 10th House, Speaker Abbas stressed the collective responsibility to ensure that the armed forces and police are well-equipped and adequately funded to combat the numerous security challenges facing Nigeria.
Speaker Abbas emphasized the critical role of legislators in establishing necessary legislative frameworks to support the national security architecture through robust laws that target the root causes of security challenges.
In reiterating the commitment of the 10th House to supporting the efforts of security agencies, Speaker Abbas outlined plans for adequate funding, provision of modern equipment, intensified training, and enhanced welfare packages for security personnel to enable them to effectively carry out their constitutional duties.
Unveiling the Legislative Agenda of the House on November 14, 2023, Speaker Abbas underlined security as a top priority and expressed their dedication to implementing legislative measures to bolster national security.
Babajimi Benson, the committee chairman, also expressed concern about the prevailing security challenges in Nigeria and assured Nigerians of the Committee’s determination to execute their legislative functions effectively, efficiently, and in a manner that ensures the safety of lives and property.
