In a recent interview with Friday Olokor, Akin Osuntokun, the Director-General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council, condemned the recent attack on the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, during a rally in Katsina State. Osuntokun described the scene as chaotic and suggested that the attack was an organized response from political opponents who were unsettled by the unexpected success of the previous day’s rally in Kano. He noted that Katsina has a reputation for violence, exacerbated by a long-standing security crisis, which made the incident somewhat anticipated.

The political landscape in Nigeria is often marked by tension and sporadic violence, particularly during election periods. Osuntokun highlighted that Nigeria is home to multiple terrorist groups, including Boko Haram and ISWAP, which have contributed to a significant breakdown of security. He pointed out that attacks on political convoys are not uncommon in Katsina and Kano, especially during election seasons. The recent rally in Kano, which garnered unexpected support for Obi, may have triggered a sense of panic among opponents, leading to the violent response aimed at intimidating campaign efforts.

When asked whether the attack was politically motivated or the work of bandits, Osuntokun acknowledged that both perspectives could be valid. He emphasized that thuggery has long been a part of Nigerian politics and has often paved the way for more severe forms of violence, such as banditry and militancy. He noted that the political climate in Nigeria is characterized by recurrent crises, particularly in states like Katsina, where law and order are frequently compromised.

As the elections approach, Osuntokun expressed concerns about the security situation and the potential for violence. He maintained that a credible politician has nothing to hide and must continue their mission despite risks. However, he also recognized the likelihood of severe security challenges during the election season, particularly in regions like Borno, Katsina, and Zamfara, where the Independent National Election Commission may struggle to conduct free and fair elections. He pointed to warnings from foreign governments about potential attacks, suggesting that these assessments should not be dismissed lightly.

In discussing the South-East region, which is traditionally a stronghold for the Labour Party, Osuntokun acknowledged the rising violence and attacks on INEC offices. He attributed some of this unrest to the actions of fifth columnists who may be trying to instigate chaos to justify a state of emergency or deter voter participation. He urged citizens from the South-East to work towards ensuring a peaceful election, emphasizing that the majority of people do not support violence.

Regarding the possibility of a run-off in the upcoming elections, Osuntokun expressed confidence that Peter Obi would win outright without the need for a second round. He explained that a run-off typically occurs when no candidate meets the necessary conditions for election, but he believes that the Labour Party will fulfill those conditions. He also anticipated potential post-election violence, as some voters might reject outcomes they perceive as unjust, but he noted that the electorate is increasingly educated and motivated to assert their rights.

Finally, when discussing the Labour Party’s chances in the South-West, particularly in Lagos, Osuntokun was optimistic. He stated that if the elections are conducted fairly, the Labour Party would emerge victorious, citing strong support from both his peers and the younger generation, who are united in their backing of Obi.
