In a bold declaration, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured that the era of strikes by university lecturers will become a distant memory under his leadership.
Tinubu affirmed that every necessary measure will be implemented to prevent universities from embarking on strike actions in the future.
As reported by Media Talk Africa, the President made the announcement to cancel the contentious deduction of 40 per cent of Internally Generated Revenues (IGRs) from government-owned universities.
During the 33rd convocation ceremony of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Tinubu, represented by Prof. King-David Terna Yawe, a former President of West Africa College of Surgeons (WACS) and a visiting Professor of the National Universities Commission (NUC), emphasized his government’s commitment to addressing all challenges in the education sector.
He urged university unions to collaborate with the government to foster development, creating a peaceful and conducive atmosphere on campuses. Moreover, Tinubu pledged to institute motivating initiatives to enhance productivity and called for reciprocal actions from universities as the government strives to elevate the standard of teaching and learning environments.
“To whom much is given, much is expected. Dialogue, patience, and positive engagements are superior to strike actions in achieving desirable outcomes. Industrial disharmony disrupts lives, wastes time, and prolongs academic calendars. Therefore, exhaustive dialogue must precede any consideration of strike actions as a last resort,” Tinubu asserted.
