Reports from the Rivers State House of Assembly indicate that the factional Speaker, Eddison Ehie, narrowly escaped what is being described as an assassination attempt on his life and that of his family.
According to a statement released by the Legislative correspondents in the state, the former House leader was reportedly ambushed at 11pm on Sunday, 19th November 2023, by a group of individuals armed with dangerous weapons, including rogue Police Officers.
The statement alleged that these assailants were fully armed and had the clear intention of assassinating Ehie and his family.
Ehie, who is the former Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly, had recently been suspended by the embattled Speaker of the house, Martins Amaewhule, and the suspension was reportedly endorsed by 24 members of the House.
This move came in the wake of a fire incident that occurred at the state House, causing damage to the Hallowed Chamber on 29th October, 2023.
Following the fire outbreak, Ehie and four other members of the House were suspended based on allegations by their colleagues that they were the masterminds behind the destructive inferno that gutted the Assembly.
On the same day, the House also made an unsuccessful attempt to impeach Governor Siminialayi Fubara, but the effort was thwarted by the governor’s supporters.
Notably, on the 29th of October, Ehie made a declaration at the Rivers State Government House, proclaiming himself as the Speaker of the House and announcing the suspension of the embattled Speaker, Amaewhule, and other unnamed members.
The political turbulence in the state has been linked to the alleged sponsorship by the former Governor of the state, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Despite several attempts by Media Talk Africa to contact Ehie for his comments, these efforts have been unsuccessful as his phone lines remain inaccessible.
As of now, the Rivers State Police Command has not issued an official statement about the reported incident.
