The Federal Government’s decision to cancel the policy for deducting 40% from the internally generated revenue (IGR) of tertiary institutions has been met with commendation from the Senior Staff Union in Colleges of Education, Nigeria (SSUCOEN).

In a statement on Monday in Abuja, Mr Danladi Msheliz, President of SSUCOEN, expressed gratitude for the cancellation, emphasizing the potential damage the policy could have inflicted on the already financially strained tertiary education sector.

Msheliz highlighted that the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman (SAN), made the announcement regarding the cancellation of the policy while representing President Bola Tinubu at the 75th Founder’s Day ceremony of the University of Ibadan.

Furthermore, Msheliz commended President Bola Tinubu for taking the decision to cancel the policy and urged him to revisit previous agreements with the union to enhance the quality of education in the country.

He stressed, “The President, as a visitor to the university, pledged his commitment to the reform of the nation’s education sector as the bedrock for national development.”

SSUCOEN also pointed out a leaked memo issued to the heads of all tertiary institutions by the government, which indicated that 40% of their IGR would be automatically deducted via the Treasury Single Account starting from November.

Expressing their stance, Msheliz stated, “SSUCOEN urges the government to desist from tampering with internally generated revenue and instead focus on enhancing and upholding the country’s reputation.”

Overall, the cancellation of the 40% IGR deduction policy has been met with appreciation from SSUCOEN, with an appeal for a renewed focus on fortifying the nation’s educational sector.
