Minister Orders Probe into Alleged Terrorism Financing by Prison Officials

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has taken a firm stance against alleged misconduct by some personnel of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), ordering an immediate investigation into an intelligence report on the matter. The directive follows comments made by the Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, who revealed that certain prison officials collaborated with inmates to fund the activities of proscribed terrorist groups during a session with the House of Representatives.

Expressing his condemnation of the unpatriotic act, the minister has tasked the Controller-General of the NCoS, Haliru Nababa, with initiating a thorough investigation to shed light on the disturbing allegations. Emphasizing the need for a swift inquiry, Minister Tunji-Ojo has underscored the importance of uncovering the truth in this matter.

Furthermore, he has made it clear that any officer found to be complicit in sabotaging the prison service and, by extension, the national security, will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. Assuring the public of decisive action, the minister has affirmed the government’s commitment to reforming the prison service in line with international standards, with a focus on genuinely rehabilitating inmates. This aligns with the vision of the “Renewed Hope Agenda” of President Bola Tinubu.

In a resolute statement, the minister declared an end to mere rhetoric without concrete action, emphasizing the administration’s zero-tolerance for breaches by any officer. He stressed that the state’s interests take precedence over individual agendas, signalling a proactive approach to address such serious allegations.

The minister’s unwavering response underscores the government’s commitment to upholding national security and ensuring the integrity of the correctional service. This marks a pivotal step towards fostering public trust and fortifying the nation’s efforts in combating terrorism financing within its borders.
