The media arm of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council has dismissed reports suggesting that its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is considering withdrawing from the election scheduled for February 25. The Obi-Datti Media Office accused unnamed political parties of attempting to clone Obi’s image on promotional items to create the impression that he is trying to sway votes through inducements. In a statement released on Friday, the Obi-Datti Campaign Media Office labeled the report as both absurd and false.
The statement emphasized the ridiculousness of the notion that a frontrunner in a competitive race would step down for someone trailing behind. It pointed out that the actions of other parties, which have resorted to using Obi’s likeness on corruptly induced gift items like bags of rice, posters, and billboards, underscore his status as the leading candidate in the race. Since Obi became the Labour Party’s flag bearer in June 2022, the party and its campaign have gained significant traction, attracting both local and international attention. The statement asserted that Peter Obi’s performance has set a benchmark against which other candidates and their parties are now being evaluated.
Furthermore, the media office noted that the attempts by other parties to associate their candidates with Obi, even without his consent, reveal who truly should consider withdrawing from the race. It argued that in a fair political environment, where merit and qualifications are respected, other presidential candidates would have honorably stepped aside. The statement also suggested that the motivation behind the misleading report is to distract Obi from his campaign, with the hope that such distractions might improve the chances of those behind the report.
The media office criticized the authors of the report for attempting to instill a false sense of hope in themselves regarding their chances of winning. It stated that their efforts are aimed at diverting Obi’s focus and creating confusion among the public. Given that Obi has been confirmed as the frontrunner by four scientifically conducted opinion polls, the suggestion that he might consider stepping down is deemed laughable.
The statement acknowledged the growing political engagement of the youth, who are determined to reclaim their country and have found in Obi a suitable leader for this endeavor. It suggested that those spreading the unfounded rumors either lack understanding of the evolving political landscape or are deliberately trying to sow discord. The media office concluded by asserting that, in light of the current political dynamics, it is the less reputable candidates who should be the ones stepping aside to make way for the impending political revolution.
