An advocacy group, Advocacy for Justice and Good Governance (AJGG), has called for the prosecution of the Kano State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Haruna Isa Dederi, following his allegations of corruption against Justices of the Appeal Court.
The Coordinator of AJGG, Francis Nzeoke, emphasized the need for Dederi to provide concrete evidence supporting his allegations during his appearance on the Channels Television programme ‘Sunrise Daily’.
Nzeoke highlighted the contentious environment surrounding election litigations in Kano, expressing concern over the intimidation and defamation of the judiciary by state officials. He also affirmed the group’s commitment, alongside other NGOs, to resist any attempts to intimidate judges and justices.
Furthermore, he urged the Nigerian Bar Association to take appropriate disciplinary actions against members found wanting, stating, “We are calling on the authorities to question Dederi so that he provides evidence of all the allegations he made on Channels Television. If he cannot, he should be arrested and prosecuted.”
Expressing worry over the recent trend of politicians resorting to threats against justices after losing court cases, the group emphasized the negative impact on democracy and the rule of law.
