Kano Grand Khadi Grants Bail to 147 Offenders, Forms Committee to Review Amputation Sentence

The Grand Khadi of Kano State, Dr Tijjani Ibrahim-Yakasai, has taken a significant step by constituting a committee to reevaluate the case of a long-term convict who has been awaiting amputation for 18 years while in custody.

In addition, Mr. Ibrahim-Yakasai has granted bail to 147 offenders with minor offences held in two custodial centres within the state. This noteworthy decision was revealed in a statement by Nigerian Correctional Service Kano Command’s Spokesperson, SC Musbahu Kofar-Nassarawa, on Monday in Kano.

According to SC Musbahu Kofar-Nassarawa, the purpose of this decision is to decongest the custodial centres and afford freedom to those who have been languishing in confinement within the state.

Among the noteworthy details revealed, the committee comprises six judges, led by an Upper Sharia Court Judge, Ibrahim Sarki-Yola.

It is important to note that a Kano Shari’a Court had previously issued a judgement ordering the amputation of a convict’s left leg and right hand for the crime of theft. The committee’s primary task is to review the case of a convict who has spent 18 years in the Kano Correctional Center without the sentence being executed.

During his address, Mr. Ibrahim-Yakasai urged the released inmates to uphold good conduct and refrain from any actions that could lead to their return to the correctional facilities.

In response, the Controller of Corrections, Kano Command, Suleiman Mohammed-Inuwa, expressed gratitude to the Grand Khadi for significantly alleviating the congestion in the state’s facilities. Furthermore, he urged the released inmates to display exemplary behavior for others to emulate.
