The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), stated on Friday in Daura that serving as the chief executive of a diverse country like Nigeria is a blessing from God. He reflected on his survival during the 30 months of the Nigerian Civil War, which took place from late 1967 to early 1970, attributing his life’s preservation to divine intervention. “For the President of Nigeria, at this time, to come from Daura is the grace and mercy of God,” Buhari remarked during his visit to the Emir of Daura, Faruk Faruk, following the inauguration of two roads. This information was shared in a statement titled, “God has been kind to me; I survived many battles – President Buhari.”
As his tenure approaches its conclusion on May 29, 2023, Buhari emphasized that the opportunity to serve the nation is a gift from God. He noted Nigeria’s global recognition for its diversity, encompassing various religions and cultures, as well as its large population. He reiterated, “For the President of Nigeria, at this time, to come from Daura is the grace and mercy of God.” Reflecting on his experiences during the Civil War and personal challenges, Buhari recounted how he secured his first job managing a cooperative in Daura but ultimately joined the army amid societal pressure to marry. “I told Governor Aminu Masari the story of how I left Daura to join the army. That was how God planned it. We make choices in life, but eventually, destiny is before God,” he explained.
Buhari shared harrowing memories from the war front, recalling the loss of many lives, including those of his comrades who fell beside him. “God kept me,” he stated, recounting how many bridges were destroyed just before and after his arrival at certain locations. He expressed gratitude for his survival, saying, “I am alive today only by God’s grace.” The President assured the emirate that he plans to return and settle in Daura after his term ends on May 29, 2023. He also expressed appreciation to the monarch for the various recognitions and titles bestowed upon his close aides and family members, stating, “I am grateful for all the support.”
The Emir of Daura reflected on a bomb attack that targeted Buhari in 2014, when he was the All Progressives Congress flagbearer, describing the President’s survival as “a divine act” that occurred shortly before his electoral victory in 2015. He acknowledged the benefits that Katsina State has received from Buhari’s presidency, expressing gratitude on behalf of the Daura community. “For a long time, we will be talking about the blessings of God in our domain,” Faruk remarked. He also praised Governor Masari for his efforts in serving the people within the available resources, stating, “Governor Masari is not a thief. The governor has done his best with available resources.” Faruk highlighted that the President has witnessed significant progress during his two-day visit, although he noted that there is still much more to see.
Buhari’s visit to the Emir marked the conclusion of his two-day state visit, during which he commissioned several projects, including the Musawa General Hospital, Government Day Secondary School in Musawa, and various roads such as the Gora-Makauraci-Malamawa Road, Sandamu-Baure-Babban Mutum Road, and the Gurjiya-Sandamu-Karkarku roads in Daura.
